Winner, Portland AIA 2009 Merit Award
In offering a new building type for a distinctively American Muslim group this new community center and mosque is planned around an abstracted accommodation for four traditional elements, qibla, prayer, wudu, and community, respecting the group’s principles of utility, modesty, and simplicity. Heavy masonry walls fold on themselves and wrap spaces; at once protecting and revealing, their combination of strength and delicacy honors a rich heritage of Islamic building within a modern form and context.
